ӽ mourns the passing of former Board of Trustees member and devoted community leader, Charlotte Lunsford Berry, who died on November 7, 2025, at the age of 94.

Charlotte Berry’s life was defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of philanthropy to change lives. Known as “America’s Volunteer,” she brought that same spirit of generosity and leadership to ӽ, where she served on the Board of Visitors from 2012 to 2014 and the Board of Trustees from 2014 to 2022.

During her tenure, Charlotte was a steadfast advocate for women’s education and empowerment, embodying the College’s mission to prepare leaders who strengthen their communities. Her thoughtful counsel, tireless energy, and philanthropic vision enriched countless initiatives across campus and inspired those who served alongside her.

Charlotte’s dedication to ӽ reflected the values that defined her extraordinary life. From her earliest years raising money for children in need, to her decades of leadership with the American Red Cross, United Way, and countless civic and charitable organizations, she championed service at every level. Her influence reached far beyond Columbia, but her impact on this College community was deeply personal, marked by mentorship, generosity, and an authentic belief in the potential of every student.

Her decades of civic leadership earned her some of the nation’s highest honors, including the American Red Cross Harriman Award, the United Way Humanitarian of the Year Award, South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto, and, most recently, the President of the United States’ Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award.

Charlotte Berry’s legacy at ӽ will continue to inspire generations of students and leaders who follow her example of purpose-driven service.
